Nothing

I will give you nothing

I will give you no

thing,

no clutter of possessions

shape and form,

no lumberyard of acquisitions

no yardsale of household miscellany,

no treasure house of price-tagged

artless objects,

only

a rope of comprehension

in a sea of inattention

a butterfly pressure

of lips against your neck,

a seamless channel

heart to heart,

a weight of meaning

to anchor a drifting soul.

I will give you nothing.

I will give you

thing.

Books have been known

To acquire strange habits

Methinks that they breed in the dark

Like rabbits

James Liddy's afflicted with gout

From drinking too much Guinness stout

For he'd stay out all night

Till the dawn's early light

Or at least till the barrels ran out
